How to use Knowve's moving cost estimate
Reviewed
Knowve's free interstate move assessment helps you prepare a move plan, build an inventory with photos, and review a Move Report. Any cost range in that report is for planning. Before booking, get a written estimate from the moving company for the belongings and services you want included.
Use this guide to understand the report's limits, improve the information behind your move plan, and ask clearer questions when you request a quote.
Start with a clear picture of your move
An inventory is a useful starting point because "a two-bedroom home" can mean very different amounts of furniture and boxes. Work through each room, then check closets, outdoor areas, and anything kept in storage. Separate belongings you plan to move from items you will sell, donate, or leave behind.
Use photos to add context. Include large furniture, unusual items, and spaces that are easy to overlook. A photo cannot establish everything about an item, including its weight, hidden contents, or whether it will fit through a doorway. Add measurements or explanations when a moving company needs them.
Our moving inventory and access checklist gives you a practical way to prepare. These are quote-preparation recommendations; they do not describe a guaranteed adjustment to Knowve's displayed range.
How your planning report develops
The preliminary assessment starts with your route, timing, home size and moving method. You can then add or review inventory, photos, packing choices and access details to build the complete Move Report. Review the item counts and assumptions yourself, particularly when an image does not show the full item or room.
Your report is based on the information available at that stage. An incomplete inventory, uncertain destination or changed service request can leave important questions open. The score is a planning aid, not a rating of a moving company or a promise that the estimate will match its price.
Treat the range as an early budget reference
A planning range can help you decide what to investigate next. It does not reserve a truck, confirm a moving company's availability, or lock in a price. Avoid treating either endpoint as a promised minimum or maximum charge.
Before comparing the range with a provider's price, write down what you expect that price to cover. Consider transportation, packing, loading, unloading, storage, and any special handling you want. Mark an uncertain service as "to confirm" rather than assuming it is included.
Keep a separate list for your own travel and arrival expenses. That makes it easier to distinguish the shipment price from the total amount you need for moving day and settling in.
Understand the mover's written estimate
For interstate household-goods moves, FMCSA explains that a mover's estimate generally follows an on-site or virtual survey, unless the customer waives the survey in writing. The written estimate should identify the shipment and services. Knowve's planning report does not replace that process. See FMCSA's consumer handbook, pages 4–5.
A binding estimate addresses the agreed shipment and services. Adding belongings or changing services can require a new agreement. A non-binding estimate does not guarantee the final price. Ask the mover which type you are receiving and what could change the amount you owe; the handbook explains the conditions and payment rules.
Compare the actual documents, including exclusions and additional charges. A low number is difficult to evaluate when its scope is unclear.
Resolve these questions before booking
Ask the company to confirm, in writing:
- Which items, box counts, and services are included?
- Are both addresses and any additional stops correct?
- Have stairs, elevators, parking, and carrying distances been discussed?
- What pickup and delivery dates or windows are agreed?
- What happens if the inventory or schedule changes?
- Which protection option, payment terms, and cancellation conditions apply?
FMCSA's tips for a successful move explain the written documents to review and recommend checking a mover's registration. An online planning result should never be a reason to skip those checks.
Decide whether to request a quote
Knowve's assessment and Move Report are free. You can use them to prepare before deciding whether to request contact from a moving company.
If you choose that step and authorize sharing, your contact details, full Move Report and saved inventory photos go to one moving company to prepare your quote. Your information is not shared with additional moving companies or used for unrelated marketing. Read the Knowve Verified overview for the specific checks and their limits.
