Know before you book
Check my moving company
Start with the facts behind the name. Look up a company’s FMCSA record, understand its reported role and know what to confirm before trusting it with your move.
- Search by company name, USDOT or MC number
- See reported roles, fleet details and record dates
- Find numbers in a quote without uploading the file
Start with the company on your quote
A USDOT number gives the most precise match. If you have only a name, compare the location and legal name before choosing a record.
Have a written quote? Find its USDOT or MC numbers
The file is read on your device and is not uploaded or saved by Knowve. Only the company name or number you choose to search is sent to Knowve and the DOT data service. This finds identifiers; it does not review the quote’s price or terms.
Text-based PDF or .txt · up to 2 MB · PDFs up to 20 pages. Photos, scanned PDFs and password-protected PDFs need manual entry.
From a record to a better decision
Three checks before you book
1. Match the identity
Compare the legal name, USDOT number, address and telephone with the written estimate. A familiar brand name or copied registration number does not prove the person contacting you represents that company. Resolve mismatches before paying.
2. Confirm the role and authority
A carrier transports the shipment; a broker arranges transportation. Some companies report both roles. Ask who will perform your move and verify that entity’s current household-goods authority and insurance in FMCSA’s official mover search.
3. Compare the written scope
Confirm inventory, packing, access, storage, delivery terms, valuation and payment terms. Record checks cannot tell you whether these are included in your price. A clear MoveScore plan helps you ask each company about the same move.
What a moving-company check can tell you
Does an active USDOT number mean a mover is authorized?
No. An active registration and authority to transport household goods are different. Even a positive allowed-to-operate flag is not a complete current household-goods authority or insurance determination. Follow the official FMCSA search link before booking.
Can I see how many complaints a moving company has?
This version links to FMCSA’s official mover search for complaint history. The available feeds do not provide a verified complaint total and reporting period here. Missing data is never shown as zero. Consider the period, categories and company identity when reviewing complaints.
How long has this moving company been in business?
The available record date can reflect creation, reactivation or a system update, so it cannot reliably establish business age. Ask the company for its history and corroborate it with relevant business records. The MCS-150 date is a form date, not a founding date.
Does fleet size tell me whether a company is good?
A reported fleet count does not measure service quality, available capacity or ownership of every vehicle. Brokers arrange transportation and may report no trucks. Ask which carrier, crew and equipment will handle your shipment.
Can I upload a quote or a screenshot?
Choose a text-based PDF or .txt quote to find labelled USDOT and MC numbers on your device. You confirm the number before searching. Images, scans and locked PDFs need manual entry in this version; no AI analysis or document upload is used.
Will this check work for a local move?
The federal record can still help identify a company, but it does not replace your state’s requirements for moves entirely within one state. A missing federal search result by itself does not establish that a local mover is unregistered.
