A little less packing guesswork

How many moving boxes do I need?

Start with the rooms you’ll pack, make room for what you own, and turn a rough number into a practical shopping list. No email or inventory required.

Build your box plan

Count only the rooms you are packing yourself. For a studio, count one sleeping area; add a living area only if it has separate belongings.

Your rooms

Count clean, sturdy boxes in sizes that fit your belongings. Already-packed boxes count too.

Your starting range

30–48 boxes total

30–48 additional boxes after subtracting the 0 you have.

A Knowve planning assumption, not a measured household average or guaranteed quantity. Specialty cartons are separate.

Bedrooms / sleeping areas × 2
16–24
Kitchens × 1
8–12
Living / dining / office rooms × 1
4–8
Bathrooms × 1
2–4

Pack a shelf or cupboard first, then adjust the shopping list. You do not need to buy the entire range at once.

Compare packing kits & supplies

Hiring movers to pack? Ask which boxes and materials are included before buying. A full-service move can still be self-packed.

What size moving boxes should I buy?

Small: keep weight manageable

Books and other dense belongings can make a large carton awkward to lift. Use smaller sturdy cartons, follow the box’s load rating and check the packed weight.

Medium: everyday mixed items

Use these for items that fit with their cushioning, such as kitchen tools, toys and household odds and ends. Keep related items together and label the destination room.

Large: light and bulky

Bedding, pillows and soft belongings are better candidates than a carton full of books. A larger box is not a substitute for stronger protection.

“Small” and “large” differ by seller. Compare dimensions, strength and intended use, not just the total number in a kit. Plan wardrobe cartons, dish dividers, TV protection and mirror cartons separately.

Make the estimate fit your actual belongings

  1. Remove items you are donating, selling or leaving behind before counting.
  2. Check closets, cupboards and storage areas. Furniture size alone does not tell you how many loose items need boxes.
  3. Pack one representative shelf or cupboard. Use that real result to revise your room’s allowance.
  4. Count usable boxes and packed cartons you already own. Replace damaged, damp or unsuitable cartons.
  5. Compare a kit’s size mix with your list. A smaller kit plus specific extras may suit you better than a larger bundle.

DIY, self-packed or professionally packed?

With a rental truck or container, you usually arrange packing and supplies. Professional movers can load and transport belongings you packed yourself, too. If you buy a packing service, confirm its materials and exclusions in the written proposal before ordering your own kit.

How this box calculator works

These are Knowve’s starting assumptions for a shopping worksheet, not survey results, provider advice or a prediction for every household. Moderate packing uses the ranges below. Light multiplies each room subtotal by 0.75; full multiplies it by 1.5. Each subtotal rounds up to a whole box. We add the subtotals and subtract usable boxes, never going below zero.

  • Bedrooms / sleeping areas: 8–12 standard cartons per room or area.
  • Kitchens: 8–12 standard cartons per room or area.
  • Living / dining / office rooms: 4–8 standard cartons per room or area.
  • Bathrooms: 2–4 standard cartons per room or area.
  • Storage / garage areas: 4–8 standard cartons per room or area.

Only count areas you are packing. Collections, fragile items, unusually full rooms and specialty cartons need individual review. A small carton is not interchangeable with a large one; the subtraction is a rough total, not a size-matched shopping order.

This tool runs in this page without a paid API. It does not read or change your saved assessment, MoveScore, inventory box allowance or moving-cost estimate. Reloading resets the worksheet.

Moving-box questions

Does a two-bedroom move need a fixed number of boxes?

No. A sparsely furnished two-bedroom home and one with packed closets can need very different quantities. Include shared rooms and storage, then check the allowance against what you actually pack.

Can I reuse boxes?

Count only cartons that are clean, dry, strong and suitable for their contents. Check seams and corners. Keep heavy items manageable and use appropriate protection for breakables.

Do full-service movers provide boxes?

Ask what your written quote includes. Loading and transport do not necessarily include packing labor or materials. If you pack yourself, arrange boxes; if movers pack, check the included supplies before buying.

What else belongs on my packing list?

Consider packing tape and a dispenser, paper or suitable cushioning, labels and a marker. Check dishes, hanging clothes, mattresses, screens and artwork separately instead of assuming a standard kit covers them.
